Salentin, der im Alter von elf Jahren sich der Trompete zuwendete, studierte von 1981 bis 1986 Musik an der Musikhochschule Köln. Sein Lehrer waren u.a. Jon Eardley. Er spielte u.a. mit James Carter, Chick Corea, Bob Mintzer, John Scofield, Andrea Centazzo, Miroslav Vitouš und Charlie Mariano. Daneben wirkte er bei Produktionen von Phillip Boa, Rainhard Fendrich und Purple Schulz mit und trat fast 20 Jahre in der Hausband der Harald-Schmidt-Show auf. Bill Dobbins bezeichnete ihn als „einen der besten Trompeter der heutigen europäischen Szene“. Nach dem Jazz Podium (2008) hat er „sich zu einem bedeutenden Trompeter der europäischen Jazzscene entwickelt“. Das amerikanische Internetmagazin All about Jazz verglich seine Spielweise mit Miles Davis, Nils Petter Molvær und Markus Stockhausen. 2003 wurde er zum Professor an die Hochschule für Musik Würzburg berufen. Neben seiner Hochschullehrer- und Konzerttätigkeit ist er als Komponist tätig. Er komponierte auch Filmmusik und für Streichquartette. Mittlerweile hat er über 20 eigene Alben veröffentlicht. Auf seiner Webseite ist u.a. eine umfangreiche „Improvisationsschule“ (200 Seiten) zum freien Download bereitgestellt. Als Jazzmusiker ist er ein wahrer Echtzeitkomponist ( Real Time Composer ) und Melodienerfinder. Das erleichterte es ihm sowohl als Komponist (mittlerweile 20 CDs unter seinem Namen, Filmmusiken, Musik für Streichquartette), als auch als Produzent (Lounge Musik) seine Ideen zu verwirklichen. Das musikalische Spektrum seiner Produktionen ist weit gestreut. Es bewegt sich zwischen Mainstream, freien Improvisationen und Wave Music. Seine Trompetenschule bekam den Deutschen Musik Editions Preis (AMA-Verlag) und auf Salentins Homepage findet man ein Improvisationsschule zum kostenlosen Download. Seit 2010 betreibt Salentin das Label und den Verlag Dewey Records. Viele seiner Kompositionen sind auch für Big-Band arrangiert und seit 2015 ist er künstlerischer Leiter der Westphalien Big Band. Er war Yamaha Rec Artist (2003 bis 2010). Seit Juli 2010 ist Salentin Adams Artist und spielt ausschließlich Instrumente von Adams-Netherlands. Seine Konzert und Workshop Tätigkeiten führen ihn oft ins Ausland. Zu erwähnen wäre besonders : die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Frauen Chor von Gavoi-Sardinien, unter der Leitung von Mauro Lisei, die Cooperation mit Julia Sawicka-Pro Musica -Polen ( u.a. ,,Music of Sting'' mit Orchester ) und in jüngster Zeit das ,,International Jazz Project'' in der Ukraine mit Laura & Kristina Marti, unter Mithilfe von Jazz in Kiew, mit dem Salentin in Lviv, Kiew und Odessa konzertierte, das Projekt ,,Kazhargan's World '' , das Musiker aus der ganzen Welt ( New York, Russland, Deutschland, Frankreich ) zu einem CD Projekt zusammen geführt. Heute gibt es bereits 3 CD,s dieser Formation. Salentin,s Masterclasses sind ein sehr beeindruckendes Erlebnis, da er das Call und Response Prinzip in seinen Stunden verwirklicht und dies für alle ohne große Einführung umsetzbar ist. Sein großes musikalisches Spektrum und seine pädagogische Tätigkeit lassen dies zu einmaligen musikalischen Events werden.
